Evora is a medieval walled city in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Small streets bend and wind around revealing restaurants, bars, shops, markets, squares and castles. It's completely accessible on foot, with close access to wineries in the countryside. It's charming and quaint with a thriving and vibrant living history.
The location is in the middle of Alentejo, beautiful view 360 degrees till the horizon. The rooms are neat, clean and comfortable. The food is great and moderately priced, the staff is so welcoming and ready to accommodate individual needs, including those of children. You need to come by car, though. Leave the IC1 at Grandola and take N120 in the direction of Santa Margaritha da Serra. After about 1 km, turn left into EM 545 (unmarked road) and follow the signs to "Hotel". It takes about 10 min by car or 10 km. Sobreiras is on the left, gravel road leaves off at old tower ruins. Can't miss it. Trust the signs.
I found Evora very interesting. It has its own story to tell and I was glad to have heard it. When in town, make sure to contact Professor Murteira to walk you around. He's the best and he's the expert on Evora and the Alentejo region. He was with us too in Portalegre and Marvao.
Evora is a really nice city, 1h30 from Lisbon with nice views of the Alentejo countryside all the way. It has many historic places to visit, nice restaurants but the best thing to do is to wonder its streets and taste the regions wine.
Small town in the middle of Alentejo region with a lot of history and great food and wine. A great choice of you love cities with history and local traditions.
Walk in this beautiful little town and enjoy the wonderfully preserved architecture and the beautiful light. Eat sweets in the many bakeries and enjoy the delicious wine from alentejo. Leave the car outside the walls and get lost in the small streets.
Vila Vicosa is a historic little town near Evora and in the heart of the Alentejo wine region. Very easily reached from Lisbon via the A2 and A6 motorways.
The town and region are full of world-class sights. The cromlech at Almendres and he bone chapel in Evora should not be missed. Regional cuisine and wine in Alentejo are excellent.
Quaint and peaceful city (it is officially a city but feels more like a village). Enjoyed the walk up to the castle with its cobblestone streets and small shops. I would recommend Santiago do Cacem for the more mature traveler because it is very laid back. As far as restaurants, whichever restaurant you choose, you will be well served, however, restaurant "O Arco" and "O Retiro do Escova" stand out in my mind. This is a typical Portuguese "town" and it takes you back in time. One can use this city as a home base for visiting the rest of the beautiful Alentejo region of Portugal. Alentejo is known for its cork trees(sobreiros) and, of course, the vineyards that bring us the great Alentejo wines. Lastly, make sure to enjoy the beautiful coastline with its never ending beaches and charming villages with tiny houses painted in white and blue.
There are several very interesting sites within the town - and some great restaurants with wonderful Alentejo food - and some really interesting day trips from there. We particularly liked the Neolithic dolmens near Guadelupe and the walled village of Monsaraz.
Castro Verde
Delightful little boutique hotel in the charming village of Casével near the Alentejo town of Castro Verde. The service from the family that run the hotel is fantastic. We had a lovely, spacious room with very good wifi. The hotel is spotless and beautifully refurbished in a modern rustic style. There is a small swimming pool in the central patio and a terrace overlooking the rolling countryside. We were served an excellent dinner for a great price. The town is quiet and beautifully preserved. Another boutique gem in Portugal.
Ferreira do Alentejo
Beautiful property, located right by Ferreira do Alentejo, which itself is a lovely village to spend a few days in. The host was very welcoming and prepared a delicious breakfast selection for us. The bedroom was clean, private and comfortable. The fridge for guests was great to have, since we were on the road and had some veggies and beer with us. We were also allowed to bring our little dog in, which incredibly is not commonplace in a lot of rural stays in Portugal, so we’re most thankful for that!
Vimieiro
I recently had the pleasure of staying in a lovely accommodation in Alentejo, Portugal for a week-end. The decor was absolutely stunning with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. The pool was situated in a beautiful setting with lounging areas to relax and take in the amazing views. The host, Marta was top-notch always willing to ensure my stay was comfortable and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to experience the beauty of Alentejo, Portugal.
Marvão
Marvao is a great town to visit - just stunning. In the middle of it is Varanda do Alentejo. A small family run hotel, with great rooms, great staff, and a really great restaurant. I think the best meal we have ever had in Portugal. The steak and chestnuts was amazing. The owner is around every hour of the day to check everthing is perfect. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Upon arival, we checked in, and then had a beer out on the terrace, with one of the best views in all of Portugal.
Évora Monte
Views are outstanding, central location to everything the Alentejo region has to offer.. The “Place” is spotless! The hosts go above and beyond to make you feel welcome…we travel a lot, but Vicki and Mitch are exceptional in this regard. You can sense that they love what they do and want to share their special “Place” with you. If you’re looking for a great place to stay in Portugal, to roam around, explore and find adventure off the beaten path… Look no further, you have found “The Place”!
The Hotel is centrally located inside the historic walls of the village within easy walking distance to the castle and all along the ramparts which offer amazing views. Plentiful free parking was available next to the property. Breakfast had a lot of variety and staff was able to accommodate us with GF bread and recommended the very good Varanda do Alentejo restaurant for supper. The town has a high end feel to it with all the buildings nicely renovated while keeping their historic charm.
My train got cancel due to strike, contacted the hotel and they were able to arrange a transfer from Lisboa on short notice, I am impressed by the crew’s efficiency. The room is well furnished, everything that I need is available. Cookies offered with the turndown service is delicious, do not miss it. Quality of food and service at the restaurant is fantastic, especially the scrambled eggs with Alentejo sausage. The hotel has a wide range of activities, from complimentary to paid.
Comporta
adorable boutique hotel ran by Charly and Lou. The facilities are comfy, stylish and maintain the Alentejo charm with sophistication. The beds were extremely comfy. I loved the shower and pool outside. While I didn't use the pool, I did use the space outside to exercise before hitting the beach. It was a perfect place to stay alone and for a group. I was traveling alone and it was a perfect stay for a few days.
Zambujeira do Mar
An exceptional countryside hotel in a beautiful location, close to the sea. Our room was in a typical Alentejo cottage situated a short distance from the main building. It included a convenient kitchenette. Well decorated and very clean. The service was very good indeed. Very tasty, generous-sized and reasonably priced meals of fine local Alentejo food were served in the restaurant. Breakfasts were good.
What a quaint elegant chique country farm. Everything was spot on, the decoration was effortlessly elegant, restoring and bringing to life what seemed to be horse barns and stalls, done in such good taste and attention to detail. Bravo for bringing a little touch of French savoire fair into the beautiful countryside of Alentejo in Portugal. An amazing backdrop for this little gem. Definitely coming back
Elvas
we stayed 5 nights in the apt and we based at this place to disciver Elvas some lovely villages in the Alto Alentejo. thus is a gorgeous place, very nicely renovated, lovely spacious apt, well-runned accommodation, amazing people/staff, fresh home made breakfast. small (8 rooms and 1 apt with 2 rooms) peaceful hotel, a lovely garden with a pool, honesty bar… so many positives reasons to stay here.
Arriving to the Hotel was very easy. We traveled by car, and had no issues finding the location. There is also a lot of parking space withing the hotel premises. The staff was great, giving us a very warm welcome and very fast check in process. The room was pleasant, clean and quiet, with a great balcony over the peaceful Alentejo landscape. I didn't use the pool, but it looked great too.
The hotel is a centuries old former convent and military hospital. The conversion has retained the historical features of the building whilst creating a comfortable hotel with all modern amenities. The hotel has free, secure, on-site parking. Great location for exploring Elvas and Alentejo,, with a selection of good restaurants serving regional food nearby.
We had breakfeast and dinner at the hotel and both were amazing. The breakfeast had a good variety of things and was excelent, the bread from Alentejo truly is something! At dinner we tried the chicken in moscatel and it was beyond amazing! I totally recommend the chicken with moscatel! The lamb was also very good. The desserts were also amazing
Casa Branca
First of all the staff was extremely kind and polite, they do the atmost to let you feel welcome. Everyone with a smile! The Hotel is beautifully furnished, very stylish. Everything is spotless clean and well taken care of. We can recommend the Hotel to everyone who is searching for great time off in the Alentejo.
Juromenha
The apartment was big, very clean, well decorated. We could not enjoy the garden, bbq and swimming poor because of the weather but the facilities are great. The owners are so nice and they own the next door restaurant with the best traditional Portuguese food we had during our whole week stay in Alentejo.
Redondo
Quiet property in a convenient location for visiting Alentejo. The hosts are very welcoming and gracious. The pool and activities would make it a good choice for families with children. They provided us with two fans which were much appreciated in the heat since there is no air conditioning.
Hotel was great and the food in the restaurant marvelous. Very delicious and typical from that region, Alentejo. Small pool yet very good. Good size for the number of rooms in the hotel. Comfortable bedroom and hotel common rooms. Will mark it as a regular 2 or 3 day yearly stays.
I was liked my stay at the hotel! The cleanliness, the secluded location with a stunning view of the typical Alentejo landscape, and, in particular, the warmth and courtesy of the staff were absolutely remarkable. The common area of reception and restaurant was equally impressive.
What an incredible experience we had staying at Hotel Santa Clara. We were on a cycling trip and the hotel staff walked that extra mile to accommodate us. Tania and Mara were incredible hosts. We are going to spread the word far. A hidden gem in the Alentejo.
